Chinese New Year, also known as the "Spring Festival" is the most important festival celebrated in China. It's celebrated on the first day of lunar calendar, the Spring Festival celebration lasts for 15 days. These 15 days are the most exciting days of the year, during these 15 days people light firework, eat dumplings, give out red envelopes and many other celebrations.

Thousands of years ago there was a monster named "Nian". Every year during the celebration of spring festival he comes out to scare people and steal people's stuff. So, every year during the 15 days of spring festival, everyone runs away from their homes to hide away from the monster. Until one year, one brave man stood out he said he will fight the monster. The Spring Fesival rolls around, everyone started moving out of their homes, but this man stayed. On new year's eve, this man took out a red jacket and some fireworks. When the monster came out he wore his red jacket and started lighting fireworks. He knew the monster "Nian" is afraid of the color red and loud noises. His red jacket and loud firework succesefuly scared away the monster. That's why everyone wears red and light firework every year during the spring festival.

New Year's Eve Dinner
The New Year's Eve dinner is the most important dinner for the Chinese. Normally, this is a time where all family members gather together, especially for those with family members away from home. During the dinner, dumplings are the most important dish that are served, Other dishes are dependent on personal preference. The majority of Chinese will have New Year's Eve dinner at home instead of a restaurant.

Red Envelopes
The Red Envlope is a red envelope with money in it, which ranges from one to a few thousand Yuan. Usually the red envelope is given by adults, especially married couples, and elderly to young children in the New Year days. It was believed that the money in the red packet will suppress the evil from the children, keep them healthy, and give them a long life.

A few days before the Chinese New Year, people will do a complete cleaning of the house and house wares which signifies to remove the old bad luck and welcome the new.

After the cleaning, people will decorate the house to welcome the New Year. Most of the decorations are in color red. The most popular decoration is the upside down "Fu".
